Styles in Word (online course) is the matching companion for Karen McCall's book of the same name. It's ideal for anyone starting in the field of accessible document design or accessible document remediation.

The online course's opening screen on a computer monitor. This 10-hour self-paced course is accompanied by a copy of the book of the same title.

The course goes through elements of an accessible Word document that I usually demonstrate in a day long workshop. In the course, there are video demonstrations of techniques (with transcripts) and information that I simply don’t have time to go into detail of during a day long workshop.

You can enroll in the course at any time. There is no “official” start date.

This is a great course if you are new to accessible document design or if you want to learn more tips and techniques for optimizing Word documents to be accessible.

Topics include:

  • Styles as the foundation for accessible document design.
  • Types of disabilities and types of adaptive technology.
  • Word Options: tools for document authors.
  • Sequential Headings as navigational structures.
  • And Alt Text for images, accessible links, accessible lists, optimizing tables for accessibility and document properties.

If you optimize a Word document to be accessible, there is little, or no remediation needed to convert to tagged PDF, EPUB, large print or Braille.

The matching PDF eBook is fully accessible for those using assistive technologies and showcases the methods detailed in the book.
