Importing EPS graphics into PageMaker
(Windows)
This tutorial applies not only to graphics made in CorelDraw,
but also to those made in Adobe Illustrator and Macromedia Freehand.
When you create your graphic in the drawing program,
be sure to use only PANTONE PMS spot colors and not CMYK process builds
or other color systems.
Export the graphic from the drawing program:
In
CorelDraw
Use the FILE | Export command and choose EPS for the file
format. Check the box for "selected objects only."
In Adobe Illustrator
Use the FILE | Save As command and choose Illustrator EPS
for the file type.
In Macromedia Freehand
Use the FILE | Export command and choose EPS with TIFF preview
for the file format.
This is the original graphic.
To test this file on your computer, click to download the EPS
file (146k) or the CorelDraw
CDR (15k) file.
In PageMaker:
Use the FILE | PLACE command to import the graphic.
Notice that the PANTONE PMS spot colors are automatically
added to the color palette. PMS colors that are attached to an EPS graphic
have a "PS" icon in the palette. These colors cannot be deleted
or altered, unless the graphic is also deleted.
If you have problems placing the
graphic, delete it and try again with this extra step:
Use the PLACE command, but in the dialog box check the option for
"Show Filter Preferences."
This will give you an extra dialog box (shown below)
that appears before you bring the graphic into PageMaker. Make sure the
box under Spot Color Options is checked to "Add spot color
names to palette."

Cautions:
Do not use the command in PageMaker to "Remove
Unused Colors" as this will prevent the imported PMS colors from
separating properly.
And do not try to alter these colors because
they are attached to the graphic. The CMYK or RGB percentages
that are listed in the color definitions dialog box are just approximations
in case you want to convert the PMS spot color to 4-color process (see
graphic below). Just make sure the type is set to Spot in the pop-down
menu.
How to test the color separations:
You can test the color separations on your b/w laser printer to simulate
the actual sheets of film that will be output from your service bureau's
imagesetter. Here's how.
Use the FILE | PRINT command and under the button
for Color, check the following options:
- Separations
- Check the individual colors (mark with an "x") you want
printed
DO NOT CHECK the "All to process"
button, as this will convert all your PMS spot colors to 4-color process
builds and you will not get the colors you expected when the job is printed.
And DO NOT SELECT the "Remove Unused"
button as this will prevent your PMS colors from separating correctly.

You should get a sheet of paper for every ink color
used on every page of your document.
