There are a seemingly limitless number of "free clip art!" sources by doing an Internet search. Of course, the quality of these images varies wildly, and it's pretty safe to assume that they are NOT suitable for print reproductions.

The following sites are a sampling of sources where you can purchase general-topic and specialized clip art and illustrations. Take a look too at PubCom's listings for stock and royalty-free photography (click here), as some of those companies also offer illustrations and footage.

Don't forget to check your CDs! Remember to check the CDs that came with the purchase of your drawing, photo-editing, and other digital media programs, as you can often find free clip art and fonts to use. CorelDRAW provides an entire CD with thousands of clip art images in a wide variety of styles, photos, and fonts free with its program.

AdArt (www.ad-art.com) — Logos and Symbols

Aridi Computer Graphics (www.aridi.com) — Ornaments and Borders
Aridi's specialty is borders, ornaments, initial caps, ribbons, and banners.

Features different membership options, enabling you to search and download images suitable for print and web work. You can try a sample search at their site.

Artbeats (www.artbeats.com) — Textures and Footage
Artbeats provides royalty-free digital stock footage and textures. Its footage features quality imagery sourced from motion-picture film with licensing that allows unlimited use for any purpose including broadcast. The textures (marble, paper, sky, and more) are taken from drum scans of medium format transparencies.

ArtBitz (www.artbitz.com) — General, Logos and Symbols
Features royalty-free illustrations and clipart for awards, banners, arrows, icons, medallions and seals. Very nice, distinctive and classy art that's suitable for print and website projects. Free samples available at the website.

A resource for royalty-free illustration, featuring a wide variety of fresh, high-quality images for browsing and purchase.

AutoFX Software (www.autofx.com) — Special Effects and Photographic Frames
Features frames, photographic edges, and more.

BizPresenter ( www.bizpresenter.com) — General for PowerPoint
Focuses on presentation software such as PowerPoint. A subsidiary of Corbis Corporation, offers images appropriate for small-business presentations, templates with background designs, illustrations, and The New Yorker cartoons.

Features a wide variety of Christian religious-themed clip art.

Eyewire was formerly known as ImageClub and Adobe Studios. (ImageClub was one of the first places to find clip art, photographs, fonts, and graphics tools.) Eyewire develops their own clip art, fonts, and photo products and resell many others, as well as selling useful graphics applications and tools. They also offer a printed catalog that features useful tutorials and other products. Fabulous collection of fine-art-style illustrations and photos on a variety of general-interest topics. Excellent quality and style.

(Formerly ImageBlitz) Annual membership fee allows you royalty-free illustrations, photos, ready-made layouts and more.

LifeArt (www.lifeart.com) — Medical
Specializes in clip art for the medical fields.

Map Resources (www.mapresources.com) — Maps and Globes
F ormerly known as Cartesia Software's MapArt, this company provides fully editable, royalty-free maps in popular vector formats.

One Mile Up, Inc. (www.onemileup.com) — Government and Military
The creator, designer and manufacturer of the Federal Clip Art Libraries, electronic artwork illustrated to provide the most up to date compilation of royalty-free images that are of interest to people within the government and military. They also feature military photos and multimedia.

RT Computer Graphics (www.rtcomputer.com) — Native American
specializes in award-winning Native American, Western, & Petroglyph design clip art.

TASK FORCE ImageGALLERY™ (www.nvtech.com) — General
The main product of NV Tech. It features over 35,000 stock-quality graphics — clip art, web images, illustrations and more. They maintain a full-time staff of artists - every image, photo and animation is produced in-house. A browsing utility is included, TASK FORCE ImageCOMMANDER, with sophisticated search and editing features. (Although the quality in the huge, thousands of images collections you see sold cheaply is often very poor, this package is an exception to that "bigger isn't better" rule.)
