Bevi practices what she teaches: she's a graphic designer, web developer, and photographer. And, she's an Adobe Certified Expert (ACE), so you know you'll received superior training in her classes.

Bevi reserves a few days each month for studio-based classes. Her small 4-person training lab gives students full access to her working studio in Takoma Park, and lets students learn in a unique, relaxed, and creative setting.

This comfortable, state-of-the-art training lab is equipped with Macs, PCs, broadband, an overhead projection system, and the latest design softwareIt’s comfortable and cozy, complete with plants, refreshments, and 1 docile, mature collie who sleeps in the corner.

Dreamweaver Intensive

This is an introduction to Adobe Dreamweaver and website development that teaches how to create a basic website from start to finish, including CSS and web-standards for 508 accessibilty.
     It covers defining a website, making templates, using basic CSS commands (cascading stylesheets) to format and position text, and uploading websites. We also slip in a lot of GUI design concepts and 508-accessability methods, too.
     This class is for beginners and experienced web developers, including government employees and others who must migrate from table-based web design to CSS-based design. It's an excedllent class for those looking to brush up their rusty web skills or those who are looking to jump-start their career with new up-to-date skllls.
     By the end of the class, you will have completed and uploaded a small website that you can show your family, friends...and your boss!

This class builds on the skills learned in Dreamweaver Intenstive, and focuses on advanced use of CSS positioning, 508-accessability, and advanced website behaviors, such as Spry Widgets.
     This class is only for experienced Dreamweaver users who have either completed PubCom's Dreamweaver Intenstive class or who have equivalent experience. This will also be a little longer than our normal 1-day class, 7 hours instead of 6 hours to give you plenty of lab time to practice your skills.

Just the essentials for those who need to make PDFs for press and websites.
     We'll cover the essentials of making PDFs from commonly used software, such as Adobe InDesign and MS Word. This class gives the detailed settings that meet the technical requirements needed for offset printing (press), as well as web-quality PDFs for websites and electronic distribution. At the end of class, you'll know what to set for the different types of Acrobat PDFs used for your publications and websites.

InDesign Basics
Level 1

This is a basic introduction to Adobe InDesign that teaches how to create desktop publishing projects from start to finish.
     It covers making master pages, creating stylesheets for formatting text, importing text and graphics, setting up printing ink colors, preflighting, exporting press-quality and web-quality PDFs, and packaging files for the service bureau. Bevi also slips in a lot of graphic design concepts and guidelines, too.
     This class is for beginners who may or may not have previous experience with another desktop publishing program, or who might have rusty DTP skills. By the end of the class, you will have completed at least 1 flyer and a multi-page booklet.

InDesign...Quick!
Adobe InDesign for experienced
QuarkXPress and Adobe PageMaker users.

This is an intensive, 1-day hands-on class to get you up and running in InDesign...quickly!
     To take this class, you must be experienced (competent, but not necessarily a guru) with the basics of either QuarkXPress or PageMaker, including how to make master pages, create stylesheets, and import graphics and text files. The class is a little longer than our normal 1-day class, 7 hours instead of 6 hours.
     This intensive class will build on what you already know from Quark and PageMaker, and will highlight what's different in InDesign and, of course, InDesign's unique features.

An intensive, 1-day hands-on class in the most important advanced features for long documents, including multi-chapter books, long documents, pagination, tables, indexes, tables of content, and templates.
     This class is only for experienced InDesign users who have either completed Bevi's InDesign Basics class, Bevi's InDesign...Quick! class, or who have equivalent experience.
     By the end of the class, you will have completed a multi-chapter book with the above features. This will also be a little longer than our normal 1-day class, 7 hours instead of 6 hours to give you plenty of lab time to practice your skills.

Creative InDesign
Intermediate-Advanced Tips and Special Effects

This is Bevi's fun, eclectic hands-on class in how to do fancy designer tricks and special effects in InDesign.
     She'll demo the steps and give handouts with detailed how-to's so you'll be able to replicate these tricks when you're back at your desk. As usual, Bevi will also include the technicalities you need to know to ensure that your files fly smoothly through your service bureau's RIP and imagesetter.
     This class is only for experienced InDesign users who have either completed Bevi's InDesign Basics class, Bevi's InDesign...Quick! class, or who have equivalent experience. By the end of the class, you will have created a whole bunch of cool stuff and will be inspired to include them in your next projects.

Preparing Flawless Files for Press
Best practices for press-quality documents

Minimize extra charges and production delays at your service bureau.
     Bevi has taken her well-known national seminar for government publishers and re-tooled it for publishers of all kinds, from non-profits and design studios to commercial publishers and ad agencies.
     This class focuses on the technical do's and don'ts for files that will be output to film or used for high-quality digital printing (print on demand). You'll learn the technical requirements for  the printing and graphic arts industry, which requirements your files must meet, and which ones can be fudged a bit. The class will also provide guidelines about what to give your print shop/service bureau and what to tell them about your job's technical specs.
     After this class, you'll know how to improve your files to assure flawless output … so you can ensure smooth sailing for your next project and reduce those extra charges on your invoice. Your printer will LOVE your files!

     In this hands-on class, you'll practice taking shots with your digital camera (or a loaner from the instructor), transfer them to a computer, print them out, and burn them to a CD.
     This is a short, half-day class that gets your feet wet in digital photography. Topics include: changing the settings on your digital camera for the type of shot and lighting, transferring photos to your computer, and printing your photos on our inkjet printers. You'll be ready to snap Santa in the act after this class!

Digital Photography for the Totally Clueless #3
Advanced: adjusting photos with Photoshop Elements

So. Now you're wondering what to do with all those less-than-perfect digital shots.
     In this hands-on class, we'll learn the essential features of Adobe Photoshop Elements to adjust photos, as well as crop them (uh-oh, Uncle Louie got into the photo again this year, didn't he!) and make low-resolution versions to email to grandparents or post on your personal website.
     This is a short, half-day class that covers the essentials of Photoshop Elements. Topics include: adjust lighting and contrast; remove color-casts; crop photos; make hi-resolution versions for printing; make low-resolution versions for email and websites.

This is an intensive, hands-on class for those who produce catalogs, directories, and other data-driven publications. It will focus on extracting, importing, and formatting conventional data from databases and spreadsheets, as well as XML-encoded data.
     This class is only for experienced InDesign users who have either completed Bevi's Basic InDesign Level 1 class or who have equivalent experience. By the end of the class, you will have created a publication with data from a database and a spreadsheet. You'll also have imported XML data, tagged it, and formatted it.

Textbooks and handouts are included in the fees. Please note that for some of my seminars and short classes, formal textbooks on the topics probably aren't available. That's noted in their class description above.

About the classes:
Classes are held from 9:00am - 4:00pm, unless noted, at PubCom's in-studio training lab in Takoma Park, MD.   >> map & directions

There is one hour for lunch (on your own) and morning/afternoon breaks. The training lab will be open for an additional hour after each class (until 5:00pm) for self-paced practice time.

Classes at PubCom's training lab are limited to 4 students maximum.
